Canada Citizenship and Immigration from India
The time required to become a Canadian citizen is nearly four to five years. To become a Canadian citizen you must be 18 years of age or older. A child under 18 years of age must be a permanent resident of Canada. To apply on behalf of your child, you must either:
- Already be a citizen, or
- Apply for citizenship together as a family
For those who are 18 years and above:
- First of all you need to be a permanent resident of Canada.
- You need to be able to communicate either in English or French and live in that country for three or four years before applying for citizenship.
- You need to learn about Canada and know its political, history and geography and also pass a test on rights and responsibilities of Canadians.
- Fill the Citizenship application form downloaded from the site.
- Order an original fee receipt from the site and pay the application fees which are listed on the form. Take the original fee receipt to a financial institution in Canada and have the receipt stamped by the bank teller and attach the fee receipt to your citizenship application form.
- Two citizenship photos need to be taken duly signed at the bottom. Place them in a small envelope.
- Sign and date the application form
- Attach the documents to your application form, which includes a copy of your immigration landing record, copies of two pieces of identification and two citizenship photos.
- Mail the application form to the address given in the application.
- You will now receive a book “A Look at Canada” where you then start studying it.
- You will receive a notice to appear for the Citizenship Test with the date and time and you would have to take the written test or interview as requested.
- Once you have met all the requirements, you will receive a notice to appear to take the Oath of Citizenship, wherein you will have to appear on the date given

You cannot become a Canadian citizen:
- If you are now in prison
- Charged with any criminal offence
- Have been convicted of an criminal offence in the past three years
- Had your citizenship revoked in the last five years?
