Private transport is the one you own and use as you wish, like most of the Australians owning a car or a motorbike.
Australians love cars, and it is not surprising that most of the families own two cars. First of all it is easy to buy a new car, and getting the necessary finance to buy it, as well as second hand cars are very affordable. There is efficient transport system in cities like Sydney and Melbourne, where the transport is fast to get you to and fro from work. Even small cities like Brisbane and Perth have very efficient transport system, the only difference being the timetables are smaller because of lack of users that makes the wait longer at the bus stop or train station. Australians prefer comfort, accessibility that cars provide, as opposed to public transport, and since most of the Australians work close near to their home it becomes cheaper spending on fuel for their car than the public transport.
Australia does not have a very large train and railway system. Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane have a more developed system. The rail companies are run by the Great Southern Railway, and also the Great South Pacific Express and Australia’s Orient Express.
The three main airline companies offering flights around Australia are: Qantas Airlines, Virgin Blue and Regional Express {REX}. Qantas offers flights to a large number of towns and cities in all states and territories within Australia, while Virgin Blue is a budget airline and REX is the largest independent airline.
