AUSTRALIA-APPLYING FOR CITIZENSHIP
If you’ve lived in Australia for more than two years, and if you are a permanent resident, you may be eligible to apply for Citizenship by grant. First of all you need to confirm that you are eligible by:-
1. Permanent residency requirement.
It is mandatory to be a permanent resident.
2. Residence requirement.
You should have resided in Australia for a total of at least two years in the last five years including a total of 12 months in the last few years. You are exempted from this if you have served in the Australian Defense Force for at least three months, and served in the Australian Reserve Forces for at least six months
.
3. English language requirement.
You must be able to speak and understand Basic English language. You may be exempted from this if you are above 50 years of age, whose ability is affected by a physical or intellectual impairment and if you provide evidence that you have completed the English language tuition with AMEP.
4. Requirement of understanding your application.
You should understand the nature of your application, and may be exempted from this if you have permanent physical or mental incapacity.
5. Understanding your privileges and responsibilities.
You should understand the privileges and responsibilities of Australian citizenship for e.g. applying for Australian passport to leave and re-enter Australia, vote to help elect Australia’s governments. Stand for parliament, serve in armed forces, and register as Australian citizens by descent any of your children born overseas after you become an Australian citizen. Some of the responsibilities would be, obeying Australian laws, enrolling on Federal and State electoral registers, defending Australia should the need rise and serve on a jury if called so.
You may be exempted from this if you are above 60 years of age, and provide evidence of having completed the Australian citizenship course offered by the AMEP.
6. Good character requirement.
You must have good character and must provide police clearance certificates for the country which you have lived for total of 1 year since you were granted a permanent resident visa.
7. Requirement of intention.
It is mandatory that you intend to reside in Australia or maintain a close association with Australia.
