Australia is the sixth largest country in the world, after Russia, Canada, China, USA and Brazil, and is the only one of the top six that is completely surrounded by water. As an island nation, nearly forty percent of the total coastline length comprises of island coastlines that play an important role in defining national, States and Territory boundaries. The country has a population of more than 20 million. It is one of the world’s most urbanized countries. Australia’s official language is English.

Australia’s territory extends far beyond its political and continental borders. Hundreds to thousands kilometers from the mainland lies her seven external territories. Australia has one of the largest Exclusive Economic Zone’s in the world with the total area being greater than the nation’s land area. Sydney is Australia’s first and largest city, and is also known as Sun City.

Australia is the driest inhabited continent on earth. Its interior has one of the lowest rainfalls in the world. Its fertile areas are well watered and these are used very effectively to help feed the world. Sheep and cattle graze in the country.

With its abundant physical resources, Australia has enjoyed a high standard of living since the nineteenth century. Australia’s life style is not only western, but is also a multicultural society. Four out of ten Australians are migrants.

Australia’s best known animals are the Kangaroo, Koala, Platypus and the Spiny anteater. Nearly 400 species of birds including the large flightless Emus are found nowhere else.

Air travel and the great variety of Australian attractions are combining to bring more international tourists to Australia every year. Tourists are drawn by Australia’s sunshine, sandy beaches, rainforests, the Great Barrier Reef, unique flora and fauna, the Gold Coast of Queensland, the friendly multicultural society and the safe and welcoming environment. Tourism is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in Australia.

In April 1984, Australia’s national anthem, God Save the Queen was replaced by Advance Australia Fair.In the same year Australia adopted green and gold as its national colors.

Australians affiliated with religion of some or the other description has been steadily declining. In 1996 nearly 71% stated they were affiliated with Christian religion, out of which 27% say they were Catholics, 22% Anglican and 21.9% with other Christian denomination. Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and Judaism showed the largest increase in affiliation.
