The United Kingdom is a small nation in physical size. It is roughly twice the size of New York State. It is located as far north in latititude as Labrador in North America, but, like the the rest of northern Europe, it is warmed by the Gulf Stream flowing out of the North Atlantic Ocean. United Kingdom, U, and Britain are all proper terms for the entire nation, although the term Great Britain is used when talking about the island of Great Britain. England should never be used to describe Britain, because England is only one part of the island. England is the largest, moat populous, and wealthiest division of United King

Despite its relatively small size, Britain is highly populated, with a population density of 251 persons per sq Km. It is highly developed economically, permanent in the arts and sciences, sophiscated in technology, and highly prosperous and peaceful. In fact British subjects belong to one of the more affluent states of Europe and enjoy a high standard of living compared to the rest of the world. Ions many nations around the world has been influemced by British history and culture. For a long time India was the most important colony in the British empire, but after a long struggle with Britain, independent India today is the worlds most popular democracy.

The climate is mild, chilly, and often wet. Up to 300 days per year there can be rain n or overcast skies which make Britain lush and green, with rolling plains in the south and east and rough hills and mountains to the west and north. Because of the climate Britain support a great variety of plants, which grow exceptionally well. An estimated 30,000 animal species live in Britain. The only large surviving mammals are the re deer. Many smaller mammals inhabit Britain, including badgers, foxes, otters, red squirrels, and wild cat.

Britain has a diverse population. Britain’s predominant historical stock is called Anglo-Saxon. A substantial number of scandivians raided and settled in Great Britain and Ireland in the 9th century. English is the official language of the United Kingdom and the first language of the vast majority of citizens. The ancient Celtic language of Wales is strongly tied to the cultural nationalism of the region.

The United Kingdom guarantees religious freedom to its citizens. The majority of the population in Britain does not regularly attend religious services. The Uk has two established churches: the Church of England and the Church of Scotland. Education is of vital concern throughout Britain because a highly developed nation depends upon educated professionals and a skilled workforce.
