AUSTRALIA POPULATION
Australia is a progressive western society with almost uniform literacy. Australia is a land of immigrants. Out of Australia’s population 92% are Caucasian, 7% are Asian, with only 1% aborigines and other ethnicities Women comprise just a little over half the population.
Immigration adds to the Australian population in two ways: firstly the immigrants themselves; and secondly, their Australian born children. The contribution of net overseas migration to Australia’s population growth has averaged about 39% for the past 25 years. Sydney is the most populous city in the state of Australia.
According to the latest census figures, Australian population is believed to have crossed the 20 million mark in December 2003, which places it as number 52 in population among the 193 nations of the world. Australia is one of the top 12 biodiversity countries in the world
One-third of Australia is uninhabited; another third is sparsely populated. The total population is quite small compared to the large land mass. Population projections are based on assumptions about life expectancy, fertility rates and levels of net overseas migration. Each of these impacts on the size and rate of population growth or decline. Few developed countries have a fertility rate as high as Australia, between 1998 and 2003 the TFR has been relatively stable varying between 1.73 and 1, 76.
Since the 1960s expectations of life in Australia have increased.Netoverseas migration is the addition to the population of Australia. During past 25 years, the contribution of NOM to population growth has average around 39 percent per year, but has been increasing in recent years.
Population projections for Australia show that the ageing of the population will continue. By 2051 around 26 per cent of Australia’s population is projected to be aged 65 years or older, compared with 13 per cent currently. Massive and ever increasing levels of immigration would be needed to have any significant impact on the proportion of the population that is aged. Such levels would result in a very large population in recent years.
A new Federal government report has predicted, Australia’s population growth rate could be falling by the middle of the next century. The ABS says that if death rate rises combined with lower immigration and fertility, then Australia would experience a reversal in its population growth. Figures released last year show that number of deaths was increasing in keeping the ageing of Australia’s population.
