POPULATION IN NEW ZEALAND

More than half of New Zealander’s live in the northern half of North Island. More than one million people live in the urban area of Auckland. Nearly half the population living in the Gisborne regions is Maori, and nearly 90% of them live in the North Island. About one-quarter of the population live in the Southern North Island and on-quarter in the South Island.

The  region with the smallest population is the South Island’s west coast, with a population around 30,000. Three out of four New Zealander’s live in the urban areas, with half of them concentrating in four cities- Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, and Christchurch. Only one in seven people live in rural areas, with Europeans and Maori rather than Asian or Pacific Island. The most important contrast are between Auckland and other country, with Auckland having more Asians and Pacific Islanders.

At least once every five years about half the resident population move house. The northern half of North Island has being growing faster, as a result of immigration and higher Maori and Pacific Island birth rates.
